How Solar Panels Benefit the Environment

Lets face it, environmental concerns are piling up these days and people want to help but don’t know how.  How solar panels benefit the environment is simple; they use no energy except the sun, and are completely quiet and unobtrusive to wherever they are mounted, which can be on the roof of your house in your neighborhood, or to the top of a telephone pole to power an emergency line in the middle of the desert.  Technically you could set up a solar powered system and leave it indefinitely, and it will work fine.  Sustainability is the name of the game when it comes to environmental safety.

The stars, and sun in particular is a giant ball of energy that shoots light out in all directions until it hits planets.  On earth the sun emits a great deal of usable energy, and plants caught onto this and have been using it since the earth began, while thriving and benefiting the earth at the same time.  Even with plants using some there is more energy the earth receives from the sun than we could possibly use, meaning enough for EVERYONE, its just a matter of using that energy for free and clean electricity, and it is becoming more accessible every day.

For rural, poor areas it is difficult to get solar energy out and usable, and the energy being used is from burning fuel.  This is creates local and global pollution and ends up being more expensive.  For a rural farmer the land is their livelihood, and damaging it would do no one any good.  Also he can save a great deal when he needs it through solar energy.  We must also remember that batteries produce lead pollution and un-recyclable materials that can poison the soil.  By using solar energy, batteries, something that everyone uses, will be a worry of the past generations.

Wind is an inexhaustible source of energy and creates almost no waste byproducts. Because of this, wind energy is the “greenest” energy source there is. There are many ways to save the environment, and this has always been at the top of the list. Men have been using wind energy for thousands of years. I’m sure everyone has seen an old-fashioned windmill in their lives, right? Well, instead of using windmills to pump water and grind wheat along with other grains, they are now being used to harness the sun and generate electricity in very large quantities. Since wind energy is powered by the sun, many people also refer to it as solar energy, because technically, it is.  Air currents are caused when radiation from the sun heats the earth. Wind makes the blades of a windmill spin and the blades then collect kinetic energy. These blades are connected by a shaft that turns an electric generator and then produces electricity. Pretty interesting, right? Definitely not your Grandma’s old windmill. Solar panels are made up of cells called photovolactic cells. These cells are made up of silicon and they turn sunlight into energy that can be used for heat and electricity. They typically can convert twenty-two percent of sunlight into renewable energy, which is pretty amazing.

The size of windmills can vary greatly. There are the larger ones you see in states such as California on a typical wind farm, and there are the smaller ones that can be used to power a single home. The large windmills can have a capacity of 5 million watts, and the small ones about 100 kilowatts. No matter the size of the turbine or what it is used for, it is a great way to use the sun for energy that can be renewed over and over. Many people think that when the wind stops blowing or the sun stops shining, the windmills can’t do their job. That is simply not true. The use of solar batteries makes it easy to absorb energy and use it right away, or save it for when it is needed, like a rainy day. With global energy consumption on the rise, these windmills and solar panels are being made more efficiently. They are a great contribution to our environment.

Build Your Own Energy

Think about it: wouldn’t it be nice to not be subjected to the control and monopoly of the big electric companies?  I think it would be wonderful.  I can’t say they’re “evil”, but I can say that I just don’t see the checks and balances in their systems that make this country somewhat stable.  Rates continue to soar as we run out of natural resources, and some of us just can’t afford to keep shelling out hundreds of dollars a month to heat our homes.

The solution?  Build your own energy.  If we could do that – and some people do – I have a feeling that we would learn how to conserve even more than we do now.  You’d be on your own, monitoring your energy output and teaching your children how it’s done.  This begs the question: how?

For that, my friends, I direct you to Google.  I know you were probably expecting a tutorial in this article, but I’ll save that for my next piece/rant.  For now, I only want to write about our battle with the electric companies and offer a vague solution for the rest of us.  Have no fear, for I’m going to research this alongside you, folks.  There simply must be a practical solution, and with the information we have today, I’d almost say it’s irresponsible to not at least do a little digging on the subject.

Imagine creating and building a solar panel or two for your home and not having a monthly bill to cripple your finances.  Sounds like a better world to me.
